| The old place Saksala is located on the Saksalanharju in Haukivuori.
The spot is the result of the glacial period in which huge monoliths were transported over large distances. The Saksala rock is the biggest one in Europe. Very early there was already human settlement. The village of Haukivuori started on this place and moved later to the lake and further to the harbor and railway station. The road Mikkeli Pieksämäki is going over the hill and Haukivuori is halfway this two cities. An inn and later a gas station with kiosk are taking care of travelers. On top of the hill a farm area exists, because the fields are very fruitful, they are the best in the whole environment. After the WO II the municipality of Haukivuori has started an old peoples home on the place. In 1989 the leave the place and it was empty. The fields started to overgrown by trees and bushes it looks like a wilderness, nobody takes care of it. In front of the buildings they have planted trees in 1995 to start a forest of 2 hectares. From a remarkable area only little things left. In 2003 half of this ‘forest’ became a field again and now a lost, strange piece of forest exists. This part will be transformed in a labyrinth thought by artists. There are several opportunities to create the labyrinth; the existing trees are the material. It depends on the ideas of the artists how to use these trees and how the path is going through. |
